I thought that the first time i went to France with the Missus down to LeMans in the 4200 Woody, after x amount of miles of late tens early in the morning she started egging me on to go faster , at 125mph the car started to waiver just a tad , and so did my bottle , kept going and at 140 the car seemed to drop an inch or two and felt as if it was being sucked to the road and very very stable , carried on all the way to 165 car felt safe as anything , with the missus leaning over into my lap to look at the speedo her bottle went and we re-settled back down to a more relaxing sensible speed, what a wheeze tho
regards loz

Le Mans Classic last time, we were following our friends in a Bentley GT, suddenly saw a 2-3 miles straight without another car on it (private test track naturally). At 165 I felt a slight clunk from the DB7 and lost my bottle, realised as the speed was coming down that the noise was it changing into top gear as I had it in auto mode! The Bentley made 185mph with his Mrs asleep, Sarah was just enjoying the scenery in mine, no idea of the speed...

Just read it Woody , very interesting indeed , a niche that has needed filling ever since the privatisation and split up of BR , no one ever seems to knopw whats going on , and actually getting through to speak to a human being seems nigh impossible, think i'll be booking through him just for the ease and advice

Woody, I've done 6 different trips and always go to Italian lakes. I'd recommend Orta San Guilo on Lake Orta or Stresa on Maggiore as they're not as far as Garda or Como. Portofino/Santa Margherita are also options and I'd go via Montreux on Lake Geneva if you don't want too many long drives. I'd also go ferry-Strasbourg-Montreux and forget the Lyon route. I have researched every single possible route over the years based on nice hotels, restaurants and 250/300 miles limit per day as I agree with Lewis that any more takes the enjoyment out of it, especially if you're with the wife.. Feel free to call me if you wish, think I could be of help and know lots of good well-priced hotels.

MAF, thats an interesting thought. I usually take the cloths, but oddly havent thought about taking the cleaner. Thanks :)

Loz, I'm not sure I have the stones to do 150 with the bride, but you never know...she does occasionally nod off :)

Lovely bit of road from Dornbirn to Munich on the way back last year. 150mph when she was awake, 180mph fast asleep. Told her when she woke just to rub it in!

OK, so.....update on this.

Made a couple of bookings, one to save the miles on the GS (not many, maybe 500) but two to save the wear and tear on myeardrums if we drove all the way - not fromt he engine, from the bride!

So...

Day 1 - Eurostar Friday morning. Drive to Dusseldorf for a 16.00 train from Dusseldorf to Trieste (Euro 300), hopfully getting some of the Autobahn Loz menitioned, above.
Day 2 - Arrive in Tireste, either have a night there or head to Venice for 1 or2 nights.
Day 4 - Drive to Garda,
Day 5 - hopefully get to Modena ....if nothing else, to pray at the gates of Maserati Mecca. Hoping to get a tour lined up.
Day 6 - Leave Garda......

Not really sure where to from there at the moment. Como sounds possibly (thanks Marcos) but need to work out a route. Thinking maybe Switzerland too....we'd have 3-4 days to get home from Garda.

Any pointers? I've not really researched this as thoroughly as I'd have like due to being crazy busy with other things. Am a bit gutted as this is the sort of thing I'd have planned to a tee normally!

Day 7 Stresa, Verbania or Orta - loads of hotels, best IMHO is the San Rocco but Villa crespi is good too both in Orta San Guilo
Day 8 Montreux- Switzerland hotel splendid is good value
Day 9 Strasbourg - hotel la petite France
Day 10 Namur hotel les tanneurs

How's that Woody?

Cheers fellas, I'll have a look at both of those tomorrow when I've got some time.

Dicky, makes me laugh how you can just name places like that....thats classic! There's a man who's spent enough time in Europe! :) Thanks.

One thing to note Woody , no cars allowed in Venice, best to arrange parking outside before hand

Definately Woody, Aarchen to Dusseldorf will give you chance to hit that 150 plus , did it many times on my kwacka Z1200 , thats if there is no roadworks so keep your eyes peeled

regards loz
Just having a quick look at this...I think Aarchen to Dusseldorf is a bit out the way. We'll be going from Calais to Dusseldorf....would Aarchen be a quick, albeit longer route?

Ah....now this isnt something I've given a lot of thought to. Do I need to get permits or something? Do I need to get Motorway passes too?

Stayed there but left the car in one of the designated carparks (well safe and secure ) and they shuttled us in with our cases to the hotel , not sure what you might do if your staying with a local resident,

You should get a vignette for Swiss motorways , but i was travelling straight through sort of via Davos and St Morritz and didn't bother , in fact never saw anybody who was checking if you had one or not , if you get caught tho there is a fine not sure how much ...........not as if its the crime of the century is it

Best to check if you want to visit any small ancient village/towns , Lake Garda, Modena , Bologna, Lucca, Pizza, Portofino all fine and no restrictions, Lucca is deinately worth a visit in the walled city
