Energy crisis

Just queued for an hour and a half to get £35. worth of diesel
Need to do it all over again tomorrow to get enough to get us to the lakes.

Seems very patchy. Here in Gloucestershire, 91089I passed two closed stations and then queued for about 30 seconds to be able to buy all the diesel I wanted (for the Volvo).

Let me give you my experience of living with solar PV for the past 6 months.

I've downloaded the lifetime statistics from the inverter via Bluetooth and I can see that my 4 kW array has produced an average of 9 kWh per day since May 2012. It faces South East so the majority of the electricity is produced in the morning.

This year, I will receive 25.9p per kWh generated and just over 3p per kWh for exporting it, of which I only receive 1.5p per kWh because it's argued that I use 50% of it.

The upshot is that £900 a year is paid up.
I believe that the previous owners installed them for around £8k. So a 9 year ROI is about right.

However, people installing a solar PV array now, will not get the same rates as me. The Conservative government have been reducing the rates for new installations since 2011. I have an excel spreadsheet detailing all the various rates and it's quite confusing but today's installers will get less than 10p per kWh.(pitiful when you buy electricity at 20-35p per kWh)

You really do need a South facing roof, to maximize the chance of capturing sun. A cloudy morning for me and a lovely summer's evening is lost sunshine. Likewise a SW facing roof misses the morning sun.

Another fact from experience is that Sunny days do produce more electricity than cloudy days. A good June day can produce 24 kWh, gloomy December day around 3 kWh.

Below is a graph showing the energy curve of a typically sunny day. Ignore that break at 9:30, Dan!'s electrician was hooking up the ASHP. The peak is around 3.5 kW during summer and I've yet to see what winter bring but I reckon 3-5 kWh days will be the norm. If only I could compliment it with a small wind generator without affecting my FiT.

I'm running solar pv, ASHP and oil in a sort of combi system. Had the solar since the silly feed in tariff was around so pay back was five years and I get about 72p/kwh now including the saving from using what is generated.

It's all strange where I live. The last few days I've driven passed all the supermarket and big name stations on various journeys and they've all been queueing out dangerously onto the main roads, and some closed with out petrol. Absolute chaos.
But today's journey took me 15mins in the other direction, and there was a lovely old fashioned garage/mot station with a few pumps and not a single car on the forecourt.
I pulled up, stayed in the car, a lovely old guy came out and filled the motor with super and I was on my way. Just like the old days, and the least stressful petrol stop ever lol.

Now you know which station to always use, keep the little independent garages in business.

I just came back from my local town with a big Shell station, 3days ago they were completely out of petrol and just rationing £30max spend on diesel with huge queues. This evening no queues, empty forecourts and all types of fuel fully available. Only big difference is the price has gone up by 5p per litre since last week.

Just had an email to say Igloo energy is now no longer, so my account will be transferred somewhere else now. Let the fun begin lol

Have to agree... would not buy a house with panels fixed on the roof, new or old.
It’s always amazed me that you have to get planning permission to build something like a porch or even to replace windows on some properties yet the roof can be plastered with solar panels.

Baroness Vere of Norbiton (the Minister for roads, buses and places) is writing to all HGV licence holders thanking those for the stirling work they are doing and begging those who have recently quit to return. - I kid you not (Mr RR is an HGV driver and is ADR qualified and has a copy of the letter). Meanwhile a local delivery company is desperate for drivers and offering a good rate of pay - £9.25 an hour!!

Pardon my being blissfully ignorant of social norms on your side of the pond and all, but… is there some sort of social stigma to having PV panels on the roof?
I’ve got a 32 panel 9.6 kW array and haven’t paid electrics in three years. Here, panels get you an easy $10,000 min markup on your house price when selling, no matter the age.
From the sentiments above it seems people in the UK consider PV panels undesirable?

It is for most as the systems here in the UK look **** and are not in keeping with the house as they are basic and retro fitted.

Where they are designed and installed well they are fine.
