Any idea why there is so much rust around the bottom of the spring? I would have expected some uniformity.
Geoff

Almost looks like its been off the car at some stage and left sitting in a couple of inches of water for a very very long time.. Anyway more importantly you aren't damaged and youve limited the damage on the car to the minimum.
Cheers
Geoff

Enzo see this all the time doing mot tests and yes Geoff your right due to British winter weather and salt on the roads plus all our pot holes kills suspension components for a past time.
We see broken coil springs nearly everyday.
Do make sure you replace springs in pairs for safety reasons.
When ever i service a car i clean the coil springs with a wire brush and spray the top and bottom of the springs with plenty of spray white grease obviously the dealers do not so get some from your local motor factors.
Phil.

Agreed, very common, my maserati is the only car i have had that has not broke a coil spring at some point. My alfa 166 just failed its mot on one. As well as the weather too many speed humps

That looks really dodgy Enzo, almost as though the plastic / rubber seat has been holding water for a long time and yet the spring steel is clean on the inside of the break, weird. Good idea to get some grease on there when fitting a new pair. Very good job you noticed it before doing any fast laps.

If you look close you can see where the fracture started as its rusted inside the coil...as you state once weakened only time before it went snap.

trying to find one, let alone a pair is proving a little tricky...

I was thinking along the line that at that particular point, the coil was rubbing on the strut and that chaffed the protection from the steel and then the rust started and hence weakened the coil as Safrane says. But all the rest looks corroded too. And for the record I broke a coil on my SEAT, the broken off bit is still in the works car park.

Coil has not been rubbing on the strutt, everything is intact...except for the (rusty) failed spring :D

My advice guys keep them clean and spray the top and bottom of them with white grease simple maintenance same as looking after a chain on a motorbike.

That's good news Enzo. Given none were forthcoming before, are these OEM's or do you think someone's done their research and found an alternative?

They are OEM Miles...coming from the factory, via Swindon to Halstead :D

Excellent Enzo, so was it Alan at DL that came up trumps if it's coming via Swindon?

Yes Miles.
I have to say I found a few really helpful guys whilst looking for 550 parts,
and Alan is right up there...very helpful, very professional and always tries to be competitively priced.
