As three of my four wheels were kerbed, and having new tyres for the back needing to be fitted, I decided this was a good time to get the wheels fettled.

I wanted to change from the standard silver and did consider 'Charcoal / anthracite', or whatever Maserati refer to this colour as, but it's quite dark and 'sombre', so instead I went for a black base layer with flake then applied in the first lacquer coats.

These are the results. In some lights they have the darkness of 'charcoal' but in others they pick up the lustre of the Nuvolari bodywork.

The close-ups show the rear wheels with 'over-size' Falkens fitted. They hopefully add a bit of protection to the wheels, but I suspect not a lot.

The centre caps unavoidably take the paint differently, so they're a bit darker, which I wouldn't have chosen, but don't mind. I am going to paint the tridents red myself and will also do the same to the calipers in due course.

The work was carried out by the Wheel Specialists. They're a national franchise. I used the Nottingham branch and they were most helpful and efficient. In terms of quality and reputation, they do Graypauls custom work and had a set of 20" GT wheels in to be coated to gloss black.

Price-wise they aren't the cheapest and I ended up at £100.00 per corner, but this included various extra's and tyre disposal.

The good news is that they operate a referral program. I get a cr@ppy £20.00 gift voucher, but you get a 15% discount. You just need to mention my name. PM me if you want the details.

Hope this helps.

Andy, I think it is basically black chrome, they just vary the amount of flake. Pleased you like them. Cheers, Miles.

The trend away from standard silver certainly does enhance the overall appearance of the car.
BTW Miles, I note from these pictures [and from previous posts] that you have chromed bolts. Whilst I know 3200s bolts were [poorly] chromed am I right in thinking that 4200s were not originally chromed? - mine aren't - they're not shiny or rusty but have the same finish as the wheels.

Hi John,

Hope you're well?

I believe they were an option, but as standard came with what looks like a powder coating. Absolutely fine until you introduce them to a wheel wrench, after which they throw a hissy fit and turn to rust.

Had mine done at Classic and Chrome. There's a forum discount if you want to get yours done and I believe he's holding the 'forum set' in readiness for the next taker.

Cheers, Miles.

You're right, not originally chromed, but it lasts longer than the painted finish AM!

Sorry for the late response to the wheels, but they do look great! I need to have mine redone (more than likely a christmas gift to myself) and thanks for the details on how to make it happen.

Hi Jason, If you choose to use these guys, let me know before-hand. I can save you up to sixty quid! Thanks for the kind comments by the way! I'm chuffed with them also!
