Mile's old 4200 alive and well

If I can remember, I'll take the old I-pad out the next time I take her out. I was out with the SCD on Sunday and I had a guy behind me for about 40 minutes. When we stopped he just laughed and said he was in automotive heaven and couldn't stop smiling. His girlfriend said much the same. it's just about perfect for everyday use but the unsilenced system has to go back on for Le Mans if only to p!ss the french off!

Here is a bit of a blast from last night. It gives a rough idea of life with the spyder. Please note;

A) Please excuse the rumblings from the nagger.
B) The '140' mentioned is the distance we had covered in the last 140 miles? ;)
C) After the traffic lights, when I say that valves closed, I lied! I kept them open to listen to the pops and bangs.
D) listen with headphones for a better idea.

No mate, it isn't! Apparently it sounds a lot louder from behind. I am really impressed by the valve system, it works well and most of the noise in stealth mode still comes out of the 'loud' pipes even though the butterflies are fully shut.

I never get to hear mine really...opening the window doesn't quite do it....but its a deeper growl than yours

Me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me....I'll volunteer.........;-)

You're more than welcome to have a go in mine, Andy. Not as flash (Pink) and Grinzzz, but I'd like to hear what mine sounds like as well!

Excellent, Benny! A musical tribute to Maserasbos. With a hint of WWII battles about it, too

I found this ol' thread, which touches on H-pipes verses X-pipes: http://www.sportsmaserati.co.uk/showthread.php/7916-Wanted-Larini-X-Pipe

What I want is a bit more volume, not to fundamentally change the type of noise. A bit of digging suggests an H-pipe gives more of a bassy, big-Yank rumble, which isn't really what I'm after. Nor is waking the dead, not quite. I'm still running standard cats. So my inclination is X-pipe, but any views from her will be welcomed.

I have a H pipe, in itself doesn't do much, but with straight throughs....makes more than enough noise.....much prefer the deeper rumble........especially when moving off......Ians more raspy type output wasn't quite what I was after

Thanks Frank. Hard to know how it would play out with the different "original" note of the 4200 and GTS. I suspect trial and error is the way forward! I had a chat with Noor and he reckons the X-pipe would give a slight increase in burble and volume at idle with most of the changes happening at higher revs. What I can't find is any vids showing just the changes brought about with an x-pipe. Most of them seem to be the full sports system on a GT.

Agree, Frank. The rasp is what's putting me off, I love the volume (as long as there are valves to make it more "sleepy hollow at 3am" friendly), but like a more rounded sound - it's a GT after all, not a track prepped Nova. Oops, sorry, Ian that didn't come out quite right ;-) maybe I should say race prepped Radical?

I want to look at the whole package though, induction through to exhaust exits, and it looks like Newton has beaten me to it...that was for next year. Wish I was more technically knowledgeable about it all, but its all about learning.

Perhaps we need a buggering about with exhausts day. Seems to involve a lot of fine-tuning to get it exactly as each of us wants it. Ian has it cracked for him. I want something that sounds like a Stradale. I think an H-pipe would be too Yankee-muscle-car and may limit gas flow (based on what I've read). But, based on the experiences of Frank and others, it could well be just perfect for a Maserati engine. But would it work well with mine... who knows, or dares to dream! If I had sport cats then the x-pipe would probably be too much, but with standard cats the difference would be more subtle. So many variables, not least of all personal taste!

As its a Larini H pipe, I'd assume they did their research on whats optimum for this type pipe on the 4200

Also like a deeeper rumble Frank......Never like the noise my brother in laws 360 made it was far to tiny for me if you know what I mean.......Perfection for me is the MC Stradale noise followed by the GT S .... Also the deep burble of an AMG is a stunning sound.

Hmmmmmm....... given the terrible drone inside the car at 2k-3k created by my Larini rear boxes I would question how much R&D they really do when it comes to noise inside the cabin. Sure, they're beautifully made from high grade stainless, fit very well etc but I would expect little to no drone at the price point.

See, this is the issue with Larini's for me..I've said it before but when I lent Marks 4200 the drone at Motorway speeds was shocking.....I couldn't do distance in it as it would drive me made. It seems that others do this as well from what yoou say Mark....
