Fro me its not about the outright acceleration it's about the way the car makes you feel, how it involves you and how it handles...That's what makes me smile and from the AMG's I've driver they just haven't ticked the boxes......My M3 CSL was the best car I'ved owned ticking all the boxes and some closely followed by the M5 which......I've driven a number of AMG's and yes they sounded brilliant and went some but left me cold..The only other car thats worse is Audi.......Its like your not driving them....Just my thought by the way as I sure we all see something different in cars.
Andy, I totally agree with your point on all counts for every AMG up to the C63. I'd never in a million years have considered a Merc before that car (and indeed didnt even consider the C63 before I drove one hence I had an M3 and M6 before my AMGs).
But you do realise the C63 was a game changer for AMG don't you? It was their first car developed by AMG with specific AMG chassis (much like the M cars, a wider set up). It was their first car you can turn the ESP off on, the first one with proper LSD (with perf. pack) and believe me when I tell you the Merc has a much better steering system than the NEW M3 hence it has much more feel than older AMGs. I know we all have our own tastes but I find it strange to judge how a car drives when youve never driven that particular car. It's like comparing a Ferrari 348 from the 80's which was a shocker and saying you'd not have an F355 from the 90's which was great to drive...same maker but totally different cars
To the Si's point about C63s not being in budget...well it was released at the same time as the new M3, is the same price new yet you'll not find one under £35k. By contrast, M3's in mid-£20k's are getting ever more popular. Now that would never have happened with older AMG's which dropped like a stone yet these days the C63 is depreciating at nearly half the rate of it's BMW equivalent. Again, this proves the point that this car is very different to what's gone before.
It'll never be sharp to drive like a CSL but then neither is the new M3 (it's not even as feelsome as the standard e46 M3!) but that said, if your budget is mid £20k's Si, then a current shape M3 is still where my money would go (or as has been said, a QP... but for this price it would be a lot older).
You could even get into an M5 or M6 for that money which would give you one of the fastest cars out there...I still reckon my M6 was the quickest thing above 100mph that Ive owned, even against the 911 turbo (but it did look sh!te though hence it only lasted 5
months!).
